Become a Note Taker

Did you receive an email about becoming a note taker for one of your classes this semester?

If you would like to assist a student with a disability who needs access to the lecture content and material, please sign up to be a note taker! If you fulfill all the requirements, you will be awarded 60 hours of community service and a thank you gift at the end of the semester. All you have to do is email us at disabilityservices@miami.edu or call 305-284-2374 to ask how to apply.

The following are the basics about being a note taker:

  • The note taker will upload notes at least once a week (at their convenience, most do it after the last class of the week).
  • If there is an exam the note taker will provide their notes at least 48 hours in advance.
  • If the note taker is going to miss a class they need to get notes from someone else and scan those so the student is not at a disadvantage.
  • This process is completely confidential, the student does not know who the note taker is and vice versa so this office handles everything. If the requesting student and the note taker each agree to be identified they can make arrangements amongst themselves. However, in order to get the certificate and gift the notes must be scanned and uploaded through this office.
  • At the end of the semester, after the last set of notes have been uploaded, the note taker will receive a certificate for 60 hours of volunteer work as well as a gift of UM apparel (valued at $25). An email will be sent to the note taker informing them when they can come in and get the gift..
